Accessing learning materials
How can I get COLEG learning material for my college?
Learning materials developed with central or external funding are available to all member colleges. To obtain learning materials please contact your college key contact. Key contacts can download a range of materials from this website, our Moodle site and from the
COLEG repository (links to these areas can be found on the Search Learning Materials page). Usernames and passwords are required to access these areas.
Where can I see what materials are available from COLEG?
You can check the list of available materials within the COLEG catalogue.
How will I know when new material is available from COLEG?
We will let key contacts know when new material is available. We will also highlight new materials in the News feature on this website.
Can I get a Word version of a COLEG pack?
Yes, Word versions are available for most of our materials, however, you must use these in accordance with COLEG's Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) document. Older materials may not always be available in Word format. For more information about IPR contact the COLEG office by

Developing materials
I want to develop my skills in authoring and developing open learning material and assessments, can COLEG help me?
Yes, we can help you by providing support through our projects and our workshops. We also provide one-to-one support for authors involved in our developments.
I'm developing material for COLEG and I need help - who should I speak to?
Your key contact and/or the COLEG office will help with one-to-one support.
I have developed some learning material, would COLEG be interested in it?
COLEG is always interested in receiving new material. Your material could go into the repository to be shared with other COLEG member colleges. Contact the COLEG office for further information.
I want to develop material for COLEG, is this possible?
Our route to subject specialists for writing and peer review (when we are starting a new development) is through key contacts. We then set up a contract with your college (we don't contract directly with college staff). If you have an idea for a new development which you feel would benefit the sector, you should
contact us; we may be able to support the development in a number of ways e.g. funding and quality assurance.
Repository for Scotland's colleges
What is a repository?
A repository is an online searchable store for digital content – in a COLEG context that’s learning and teaching content. You can find and preview images, open learning packs, blended learning packages, e-learning objects, handouts, etc. Colleges can contribute learning materials to the COLEG repository and download materials from it.
How are the learning and teaching materials organised within the repository?
Materials are classified in many ways – by SQA unit code, subject, type of material, SCQF level, and many other categories – making it easy to search and find what you want.
What learning and teaching materials are available in the repository?
All materials that have been developed by COLEG and by our partnership projects are available. We will also host materials from other organisations, for example SQA and CeLLs (SFC-funded e-transformation project). Our first priority is to establish the repository as an effective system for colleges to access COLEG materials but we are discussing with other organisations how to open up access to their collections, which we know will be of interest to college staff. Older materials will be available in an archive area within the repository.
Who can access the COLEG repository?
The repository is supported by colleges through their membership of COLEG. Arrangements for access to the repository have been devolved to individual member colleges. Some colleges are giving access to all staff and other colleges are channelling access through nominated staff.
How do colleges contribute to the repository?
In each college there will be a designated depositor of content. As the system develops we will consult with colleges about extending arrangements.
How is access provided?
A user name and password is needed. Initially access will be mainly through Athens authentication which allows individuals to use single sign-on to access web-based resources. Alternative access will be provided to any colleges not using Athens.
When will the repository be available?
The repository is currently available to all college key contacts and designated content depositors. We will be setting up and testing access arrangements with each college in December 2008 with a view to rolling out wider access between January and July 2009.
How can the learning and teaching materials from the repository be used?
Staff in COLEG member colleges are free to use the materials in their current form and format, take extracts from them, add their own content to them and adapt or repurpose them for different contexts and learners, as long as COLEG’s conditions of use are respected. You can use the repository materials for any educational purposes, with any learners registered with your college.
Is there a cost for using the repository?
There is no charge for using the repository – the service is provided within the annual subscription paid by colleges.
Will there be opportunities for different subject areas to collaborate?
Yes. COLEG is currently piloting an initiative with two SFEU Subject Networks to explore possibilities for contributing learning materials to the repository.
What training will be available and when?
COLEG can offer both practical sessions and online training to users of the repository who wish to find out more about searching, previewing and accessing the learning materials.
How can college staff get involved?
We’re planning a number of initiatives in 2008/9 to give college staff the opportunity to work with COLEG to develop, repurpose and contribute materials within and across curricular areas.
For information about the particular arrangements in your college, please check with your college’s COLEG key contact. We’ll make sure that we keep you informed through the website, via email invitations to COLEG key contacts and through SFEU’s Subject Networks.
